The Betrayal
Original Air Date: January 18, 1985 Guest Appearances: Bruce Davison as John Langley; Duncan Regehr as Charles. Freedom Network Update: In Hawaii, Resistance leader Chi Chi Haspay escapes a sweep of the Big Island; at Land's End in southern England the Robin Hood Brigade attempt once again to drive the Visitor Fifth Air Wing from English shores; in Tennessee there is still no word from the Chatanooga freedom fighters who were driven into hiding when Visitors invaded; the Medal of Valor is awarded to Frankie Weatherwax, a mechanic from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who single-handedly stopped an attack on a high school by commandeering a laser canon and using it against the Visitors. Mr. Chiang continues to use the holographic version of Nathan Bates to broadcast bulletins to the people of Los Angeles and to demand the surrender of the Resistance. But Kyle suspects something is wrong, and he makes plans to find out if his father really is alive.
Willie makes contact with Simon, a Visitor Fifth Columnist he knows, and learns that Charles is secretly shipping weapons into the open city. But before Willie can find out exactly what Charles is preparing to do, Visitor soldiers discover the pair and fatally wound Simon. Willie is also shot, but manages to escape and return to the Resistance headquarters. Julie Parrish and Elizabeth Maxwell tend to his wound, but Julie doesn't know much about Visitor anatomy. She suggests they need a Visitor doctor, so Mike Donovan and Ham Tyler head out to the Visitor Field Hospital to find one. Mike and Ham return with a kidnapped Visitor doctor in tow. Julie is about to administer morphine to Willie but the Visitor, Howie, stops her just in time — morphine is poison to the Visitors. Howie is actually a medical student and not yet a doctor, but he realizes that Willie needs a blood transfusion and guides Julie through the procedure.
After an intimate night together, Robin Maxwell and John Langley arrive at Resistance headquarters. John sees Howie and immediately tries to plant seeds of distrust about the Visitor medic. Howie remarks that John looks familiar, but can't place him. They're interrupted by an emergency with Willie, and although Howie tries to save him, it looks as though Willie has died. As everyone gathers around to mourn, Elizabeth places her hand on Willie's chest and something begins to happen — Willie suddenly comes back to life!
Howie realizes Elizabeth must be the Star Child, and he reveals that he's part of the Fifth Column — not all of them were purged when Diana regained control of the fleet. Howie tells the Resistance that Charles is shipping laser canons and liquid Xenon (a fuel source for the canons) into Los Angeles disguised as medical supplies. Through his Fifth Column network, Howie knows that the illegal munitions are being stored at the field hospital. The Resistance group makes plans to raid the place and prevent the Visitors from ever using those weapons. Meanwhile, Nathan Bates has come out of his coma and Mr. Chiang fears that his boss will not appreciate what has been done in his name using the hologram broadcasts. Charles meets with Mr. Chiang and suggests that if Bates were dead, the city would belong to Mr. Chiang.
Howie helps the Resistance members and John Langley to infiltrate the hospital where Charles is stockpiling weapons. Julie, Mike, and Ham make their way to the control room and sabotage the cooling systems so that a meltdown of the liquid Xenon will render everything unusable. In another area of the hospital, Howie finally recognizes John as one of Diana's henchmen. John knocks out Howie and rushes to report the Resistance's activities. Robin learns the true nature of John, and with cries of "not again!" she struggles with the spy and tears his face mask. Julie, Mike, and Ham reach the getaway vehicle to discover John has Robin at gunpoint. As John gloats over his performance as the mole, Howie comes up from behind and shoots John. The Resistance members escape and Howie remains behind to continue the cause of the Fifth Column. As the episode comes to a close, Robin — who is thankfully not pregnant — and Ham depart to rendezvous with Chris Faber and travel to the relative safety of Chicago. |
