Mike and Ham are in Ojai, California, looking for Sean Donovan who is supposed to be at the State Academy just outside town. They learn that all the kids at the school were taken away, and then Mike and Ham are captured in a Visitor ambush. They're taken to a Visitor labor camp where they notice that there are few guards and little more than a sand moat surrounding the place. Soon they run into Robin who is also a prisoner in the camp. The three of them witness the reason for the sparse security — as a prisoner named Isaac tries to escape across the moat, a dorsal-finned creature known as a crivit glides through the sand and devours the man.

Kyle Bates, rebellious and shirtless, is also at the camp. Diana discovers that fact and plans to use him to force Nathan Bates to find and turn over the Star Child. Meanwhile, with Julie's help Bates plans to create a new, more effective version of the Red Dust. He informs Julie that they need the Star Child, as her genetic makeup may hold the key to their success.

At the Club Creole, a pair of Visitors notice the mark of Xon on Elizabeth (the mark looks like an infinity symbol between her thumb and index finger). Elizabeth tries to leave and hide, but they corner her in an alley. She then protects herself by using her powers to make a couple of German Shepherd dogs attack the Visitors before they can get to her. The incident takes its toll, though, and Elizabeth remains weak afterward.

An associate of Bates trails Julie to the Club Creole and has the police raid the restaurant in search of Resistance fighters. Julie takes Elizabeth to her place where it will be safer, but Nathan Bates shows up to ask Julie for help to find Kyle. Nathan sees Elizabeth, but Julie introduces her as her cousin Betty from Tucson. Everybody is still looking for Elizabeth as a young girl, so Nathan thinks nothing of it.

Back at the internment camp, Donovan plans an escape and he, Robin, and Ham get away. During the confusion they're separated from Robin and her whereabouts are unknown. Mike and Ham steal a Skyfighter and make their way back to Los Angeles.

Kyle escapes on his own, apparently never having met Robin at the camp. He pays a visit to his father at Science Frontiers, but the reunion is a bitter-sweet one and Kyle storms away.

Notes

  • This episode was originally scheduled to air as the third episode, but was deemed too much for the younger V audience. So it was aired during the re-runs in 1985.
